You paint, and you sell your original paintings. You scuplt, and you sell your original sculptures. So far, so good.
But in a world where it’s never easy to sell original art unless you happen to be an Emin or a Hurst, or you happen to hit on an inspirational style that people fall over themselves to invest in, you could go months without selling a single piece of work. That’s life.
The virus hasn’t exactly helped matters, although there has been a dramatic rise in people around the world buying original work online, with real-life galleries and auctions off the radar for most of the duration. Check out our blog post about
online art sales.
All this means artists need to think creatively, think outside the box, hatch fresh ideas for selling their art. It matters when people don’t necessarily have hundreds of quid spare to spend on lovely things, but still want to feed the spirit and soothe the soul with creative beauty.
We have some ideas for you, to help you generate income from your artwork in different ways. Have you tried any of these?
Top quality giclee prints for framing
You can open up your work to lots more people by selling beautiful quality giclee prints on lovely textured paper, perfect for framing and seriously classy. We can help with this, just contact us for more information. The printer will ask for a high resolution photo of your artwork, and will provide a proof so you can check the quality of the reproduction and the accuracy of the colours. Digital printing tech means there’s no minimum quantity, and that means you should be able to get them printed on demand whenever someone buys. You might even be able to arrange for the printer to post the print in a tube direct to your customer – time for some negotiation!
Poster prints
Printing your work on a more ordinary type of paper, so they’re more like a poster than a print, means the print costs less. This means you can sell them for less, potentially to more people.
Canvas prints
Most good photo printing sites or shops also print on canvas, in a choice of shapes and sizes, perfect to hang as it is or add a smart frame.
T shirt printing and more
Get your art printed on a good t-shirt and it’ll look superb, a great gift and something you can sell to a wide range of people. It’s also a walking advert for your art. You can also get other kinds of clothing printed, for example aprons, even pure silk or cotton scarves. Again, contact us for help with this as we have a supplier in place.
Gorgeous printed fabric by the metre
Digital printing tech means it’s entirely possible to have your artwork printed onto fabric. Once you’ve got the fabric you can make it into a huge variety of items – cushion covers, curtains, duvets, clothing - to sell, or simply sell it by the metre, again on a print on demand basis rather than having to pay for a huge minimum order. Here’s an example. Take a
look here and see what can be done.
Turn it into a rug!
More fun with digital print – why not turn your painting, or a photo of a 3D artwork, into a floor rug?
Read all about it here.
Calendars
Most good photo printing websites and shops let you print images on a variety of exciting products. You can simply submit quality photos and create your own calendar online, for delivery to your door or to a customer’s place. Who do you know who’d like to buy a 2021 calendar full of beautiful artwork? This is the perfect time of year for it, too.
Mugs
Imagine your painting, sculpture, drawing, you name it, printed onto a smart mug? The results can be very beautiful and again, it’s yet another way to sell art to a wider variety of people, at a wider choice of price points.
Phone cases
Did you know you can order photo-printed mobile phone cases?
Try Snapfish which used to be called TruPrint – remember them? Printed phone cases make a great gift and can be sold direct to your customers, again available print-on-demand so you don’t need to invest a load of cash in stock.
Greetings cards
Make gorgeous greetings cards from your work, either selling them on Folksy and similar craft sites or direct to your customers. –
here’s some insight into how it works.
The greetings card site Moonpig lets you upload your own images and text to make personalised greetings cards. Big, small, even on a postcard, they come in a multitude of shapes, sizes, and styles, including giant cards, all for delivery to your place or direct to someone else.
Have a look at what’s possible, here.
