Ruth Lyne
Like most people brought up in Birmingham, I have always been drawn to the sea. The colours and textures of the coast have inspired my creative work for many years. The wide horizons and big skies of East Anglia have found their way into my visual language, alongside the delicate patterns and subtle colours found on a simple pebble.
Using acrylic paint, collage and ink on canvas or board, I make expressive gestures and marks to produce abstract images that are reminiscent of landscapes and seascapes. I don’t want to recreate the natural world. Instead I try to capture the feeling of being by the sea with the sound of the waves washing over the shingle.
I work from my home studio in Felixstowe using a range of tools to spread and scrape the paint but I rarely use brushes, I just don’t like the marks they create.
