Kevin Southgate
I am a contemporary artist and work from my studio in Suffolk. I have always had a passion for the landscape, which has evolved from the love of the outdoors, particularly the fells of the Lake District.
Having always drawn and painted I am now exploring where this will take me. My inspiration has been drawn from various artists, originally enjoying collage and abstract, where early influences were the Cumbrian artist Russell Mills, who in turn was influenced by the German artist Kurt Schwitters. Having now settled into landscape observation the current inspiration comes from various artists such as J M W Turner, Claude Monet, the Scottish artist Joan Eardley and more recently Kurt Jackson.
I use a wide variety of mixed media and techniques to achieve the image I am looking for, I tend to work from small sketches which are taken from real life or from photographs taken. I hope my work will be something that the viewer will continually return to and each time find something new that was not obvious before, an incomplete story if you like.
